When you think about bondage, you probably think first about rope work or shibari, elaborate arrays of loops and knots that will take years to master and miles of rope to organise. Perhaps you’re more Fifty Shades of Silk Ties, or maybe your experience has been limited to cheap handcuffs from a bachelor/ette party. What if we told you there were way more options than those? Join Cameryn Moore for an introduction into full body bondage.

The world of full body bondage

“Full-body” in this context does not necessarily mean that the implements or materials used will cover the whole body (although in the case of plastic wrap restraint or gimp suits, this is true). Rather, these types of bondage play are excellent for stimulating a bondage bottom’s sensory and psychological experience on multiple levels, and or targeting specific areas that aren’t often considered in bondage. It’s not always a question of size or total immobility.

1. Gimp suit full body bondage

Take a look at the iconic gimp suit, a form-fitting full-body covering made of fetishy materials such as PVC, latex, or leather. Unless there are loops on it being used for securing the wearer into place, the person is still able to move relatively freely. However, the enveloping nature of the suit gives the wearer the sensation of slight compression and containment, laid down on them by themselves or their dominant. A gimp suit, especially one that includes a mask or face covering, also dehumanises the wearer, making them into an object. If you’ve ever wanted just to be used or experience full body bondage, a gimp suit may be something for you to explore!

2. Plastic wrap full body bondage

On the other end of the mobility spectrum, plastic wrap can be utilised for simple binds and wraps of individual parts of the body. Its easy availability, and innocuous nature make it a great quick-tie option for around the house if you just want a few layers around the wrists. But if you want to splurge on boxes and boxes of plastic wrap, and mummify your sub with it, you can render them helpless and trapped in full body bondage.

*Remember that heat also gets trapped in there, so have those safety shears on hand, as well as something warm to bundle your sub into when you finally decide to release them.

3. Straitjackets

Straitjackets, those jackets with wrap-around arms that you might see used in magic tricks or movie representations of old-fashioned insane asylums, were developed to target a particular part of the body, namely the hands, arms, and upper body. Beyond the effect of restraining the upper body, straitjackets can provide an immediate psychological and visual link to either medical play, a scene with specific old-fashioned elements (anything from the late 1500s to late 1800s), or both. It’s an interestingly ironic twist that straitjackets would have been used on inmates labelled “sexual deviants,” and now some “deviants” are reclaiming the device for pleasure and fashion, but if that yanks your crank, go for it!

4. Hobble skirt

On the subject of fashion and targeted immobility, hobble skirts hit the opposite end of the body, with a tight fit and usually longer skirts—sometimes down to the floor—that severely limit the wearer’s length of stride. The pencil skirt is the real-world equivalent. If you like to take the feel of bondage out into public; for play use, people tend to go for fetish materials such as leather or latex, with fetish accessories or trim, like lacing, buckles, or D-rings and straps to modify the tightness of the skirt.

Oddly enough, such a strong visual statement about restricted leg movement can hit the hot buttons on either extreme of the power spectrum. The wearer’s legs can be hobble-skirted as a way of emphasising their powerlessness, OR they can be wearing a hobble skirt to show that they don’t have to do anything, they can get their worshippers to do it for them, right? It’s a powerful queen/goddess statement if played right.

5. Posture collar

A posture brace or posture collar is a very targeted form of full-body bondage, aimed at restraining movement of the head and neck, and in the longer forms, the shoulders. These devices can be made in a variety of materials, from stiff leather to metalwork to fabric with corseting stays for rigidity; they also can be made incredibly decorative for a fashion statement at goth or fetish events.

Aside from the elegant look, however, a posture collar keeps the wearer excruciatingly aware of how they are holding their body, and it even keeps them from being able to look around at their environment properly. It’s an excellent way to enforce training in “your focus must be on me.” If you are playing with your sub in an extremely formal way, involving rigorous movement training or high-protocol positions, a posture collar is the perfect finishing touch.
