On first glance, the KinkD app looks very much like Facebook. It has similar tones of blue and white, with the only difference being KinkD focuses on photos, and there's no facility for status updates. It's easy on the eye and looks quite modern, which seems to be the big difference between app-based dating and traditional online dating sites. Apps look much more attractive and are generally much simpler to use.
Under the hood of the KinkD app
You can easily find the KinkD app in the Google Play or Apple store, and it doesn't take long to download. It's straightforward to sign up if you're Cisgender. If not, there are options, but one of them says 'other', and I feel that's a little dismissive of any gender that isn't binary.
You can then pick out your role from quite an extensive list, but it seems to lean heavily towards BDSM dynamics. You can also pick a few kinks that you're into - but only up to five! You can add anything else into your written profile.
There's no way to indicate if you're polyamorous, or what your sexuality is but you can pick all of the genders when you specify what you're searching for.
Once signed in, all the links you need are at the top or bottom of the screen. The central display is occupied with photos of other KinkD app users, and you can tap through them to open the users' profile. There are all the expected tabs, messages, profile, filter (for search purposes) plus a few unusual ones but everything became apparent when I clicked through.
It isn't surprising that the focus of a dating app is dating, and this is the case with the KinkD app. There's a vague community feel, but it's all about getting followers so you can show up on the KinkD star list. I'm not sure if there's any perk to that, other than being very noticeable to people who are searching, but it's the only community aspect of the app.
There are a lot of Brits on the KinkD app, and I found lots of kinksters in my local area. However, I noted that there are more men than women. When using the filter with all genders selected, men were displayed first. I only got to see women profiles if I deselected men from my preferences.
There are advanced search features, but they're only available with an upgrade. With a free account, I could check out others into my hobbies, but that's about as targeted as the search gets.
KinkD is downloadable for free, and you can use the basic features, so the app can be used to an extent without having to pay, however, you'll need to upgrade if you want to do any of the following:
The £12.99 monthly cost is quite reasonable for a dating app. You can get the price down if you buy 3 or 6 months at a time, but I would probably recommend caution. Try one month and if it works well for you, then sign up for multiple months.
There are no help or FAQ pages at all on KinkD, but under the profile tab, in the settings, there's a way to send a message to support to ask any questions you may have.
I found the KinkD app to be well-populated with kinksters, but as you can only send one free message each day (unless you're replying to a message sent to you) then it's not so easy to communicate. If you like the ease of an app you can use on your phone, and you're looking for local kinky people, then it's well worth checking out KinkD. But, to get the best and full use out of the app, you'll have to part with your cash!
