Terminology

Since joining I’ve found myself learning new terminology and acronyms for kinks that I’ve always had. I’ve found myself pretty consistently having to look up shorthands people use when looking at other’s profiles lol.
I guess I’m wondering if this was a common occurrence for other new members? Or have you ever had a misunderstanding based on your lack of knowledge with labels?

I think most have and I would just always look up stuff to make sure it ment what I though befor getting into trouble or arguments. Everything in life is learning curve, this is the same as leaning to walk got to start somewhere and you will learn if your willing to. I was also shy on using terms to at the start

I think a lot of folk complain about terminology and acronyms they don't understand - and, unfortunately, have copies of google that don't work so they can never self learn. Such a shame.

Just like joining any other group.. they all have their own speak.. Nod to G. ORWELL..LOL.. But to become part of said group .. knowledge must be attained to parallel your brethren.. That being said .. if you're not sure what it is ..probably not a good idea to joke about it..lol.. and don't be afraid to ask . I mean we all had to at some point. God luck on your journey..

Gatekeeping is heavy in any new community, that's the nature of society and groups. For some such as kink or fetish communities, this is for a very good reason due to the dangerous nature of many kinks.

That being said, kinksters choose how they define themselves, and many are happy to answer if asked respectfully, from a place of curiosity. Every self-definition should be a point to start a conversation with someone. There isn't a standard vernacular for any kink.

A great resource I've found is fetlife. It's a kink networking site for local kink events and venues, but also has a "BDSM Glossary" area, and a 'Kinktionary' that gives a lot of good information.

I definitely had to look up a lot of stuff. Asking questions and admitting you don’t know something was key for me. It is a lot of terminology, but if you feel like this is a lifestyle you are into, I think it would be worth learning.
