Ex**** Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Does anybody else like to use Latin phrases when messaging others?
Ar**** Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I don't use Latin phrases. I want to avoid a situation where the other person doesn't know Latin and its all awkward then.
Ex**** Posted November 1, 2021 Author Posted November 1, 2021 I think it gives a sub something to research and to understand the reason for that phrase

Then you have to explain it and the conversation just goes to hell How can a conversation go to hell when they look up a phrase and you explain the reason behind it, e.g. Non Ducor-Duco which obviously means “I am not Led-I Lead” this is quite an easy phrase to understand.
Goober-9862 Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 I don't it is terrible, I haven't studied latin since high school, and I didn't really like it then, so I think it is just to much effort.

Goober-9862 Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Depends on the person I suppose, but I'm mostly vanilla right now. I think I'd just want the excitement over an education.

Very true a sub certainly doesn’t need to research anything, generally when I have used a phrase within a message, most have come back asking for an explanation, which I have been happy to oblige. If a submissive was ever to send me a message I didn’t understand I would 100% look it up till I did understand the reason behind a phrase.

Saying 'I think it gives a sub something to research and to understand' smells of 'I'm smarter than you' or, 'I'm the almighty Dom, here to teach and guide you'. It's certainly how I read it, if it's not what you were implying you would have used the word 'someone' and not sub.

In case you didn't know, most people would not look up the phrase just to talk to you.

I just enjoy using Latin phrases also other phrases I have come across like “Faugh-A-Ballagh” which is my former Regimental motto “Clear the Way”.
Leisa Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Frankly I’d just think you were too much work and the effort wouldn’t be worth it.
Winston60 Posted November 1, 2021 Posted November 1, 2021 Well I just looked up Faugh a ballagh. Because I was curious to know what it meant. There is a lady on here that I chat to that uses Gaelic, and I look up phrases that she uses. However Latin just makes a person look pretentious I think. Sort of "I know something you don't".
ey**** Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 See - at first I was wondering if this was referencing the latin we commonly use - etc, vice versa, bona fide - so on I mean, I guess it's an icebreaker in some ways - but then in other ways if someone messaged me in latin I'd probably think they were a bot.
ey**** Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Though - I guess if we do get into Latin, a lady I like elsewhere has 'Solve et Coagula' on her profile.

Carnelian2 Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 Depends on whether you want a conversation or not. If I get messaged in Latin, I would probably ignore it, thinking it was sent in error.
Gidorra Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Why Latin, why not Chinese? They don't understand either... anyone still has a command of their school Latin? I will admit I forgot everything, except for the plural of octopus is not octopi
