Finding where to start when living remotely

I live in a small town, with no close large cities (a few which are large, but not all that large) and I would like to think more about where to start, how to find out where things go with that. Chances are pretty good that it would have to be something online, but that isn't going to be certain.

I'm not sure what more to say here, but I'm going to leave this here, if you have questions as to what I'm looking for, feel free to ask.
