A market for spreader bars

I was thinking of making some steel forged spreader bars. I'm an amateur blacksmith. Just wondering if this is something that people are likely to want? I don't have much experience myself so don't know if the weight would be too much and/or whether the style is likely to appeal to people.

Would love to hear thoughts!

Its a lovely idea but spreader bars are pretty easy, and cheap, to get hold of so I'm not sure how much of a market for them there would be. Except maybe if each piece was unique.

I like the idea though!

Oh they'd be unique. Hand forged steel is definitely unique and would be made to measure. I'm just gauging whether it's something worth investing time in - would involve buying material, spending time, sweat and probably *** in the forging, and then finding a model to do some test shoots with to try it out and market them.

Look no further for your model 😋

Like i say, love the idea. What kind of price range?

I have absolutely no idea at the moment! I need to do some more market research but I'd probably swap the first set(s) for the photo time and then go from there I guess!

ok - first off... either with or without making them you're going to need to price estimate how much it will cost you to make.

you can then, from there, work out the sort of price you would need to sell at. Both retail (if someone bought from you) and wholesale (if a 3rd party wanted to bulk order)

have a look from there to see how that compares to other bars that exist - but there's nothing wrong with aiming for a higher priced market especially if you have unique/bespoke items.

from there you going to have to work out promoting and selling them; if you can look at trading opportunities (there's assorted markets around the UK) you can look to see where would be a good place to purchase a stall and if there's opportunity for you to make other items to go with them.

It might even be there are other stores you can work for or collaborate with.

Research is definitely a lot more on-the-streets these days - while I could say I like the idea (I do) I'd also want to see the product, see the cost, so on...

I'm in no way interested in bulk selling. I have a job that I'm perfectly happy with, so would only be looking to sell to individuals on a bespoke basis. That being said, of course need to work some up as proof of concepts etc.

As for cost there is of course three components. Raw material cost (negligible - probably about £10 for a set at a guess) + profit (market driven) + labour (total unknown). Now I know it's not a totally stupid idea I'll start working up a few test pieces and see where we get to.

Need to work out sizes as well as I don't really want to go the adjustable route.

I suppose forged cuffs would be a great add-on!

absolutely - yeah - a few test pieces should give you an idea on how much it will cost.

Revilo I did the same a few years ago with a specialist mount for divers’ air bottles so that they could use them inverted (it assists shutting them off in an emergency). I made one for myself and then other divers saw it and asked if I could make them one. I ended up making about 60 of them and turned a healthy profit. It’s all about the marketing... go for it, and good luck!

Good news: Forged half of model 1: a simple solid square-bar spreader with loops at either end forged in. Bad news: I forged one end, turned it around, and then had to go to hospital to get my severely burnt hand fixed up. Will continue when healed!

Goodoh. And would you like to buy a forged spreader bar for that?
