Yet another firefighter has died on the line in this year's horrific Australian bush fire season.  Yesterday, 30 December, the fires erupted down into southern New South Wales and Victoria and it was instant disaster zone. Samuel McPaul, 28, died when the fire tanker he was driving was flipped in a freak fire tornado.  Two other men were injured and were taken to hospital.  Samuel and his wife were expecting their first baby.

Not only that, the Lord Mayor of Sydney - ever alert to which vote to chase in any given year - is allowing the mega fireworks display on Sydney Harbour to go forward, in the middle of a total fire ban and in extreme fire danger conditions, claiming that it will promote 'community and fellowship'.  She carefully avoids mentioning that it will put a lot of tourist dollars in very few pockets.  She also claims it will make the 'victims of the drought and the bush fires feel better'. Bush fire victims do not head to Sydney to watch fire works - people who have lost everything don't have a television on which to watch Sydney's celebrations.   The battling farmers have more to think about than fire works displays. Other cities and towns have cancelled their NYE fireworks for safety reasons or out of common-and-garden tact. We don't think the families of the three men lost in this catastrophic year will be 'cheered up' by fire works.

Again, the Vandal and I ask all kinksters out there to say a prayer, light a candle or have a few minutes thought for the men and women on the line and the men and women who have to wait for news and the return of the 'crew' safely. Believe me when I say it's always a long wait.   Blessings to all.  XXX

What a great loss to the world.

I believe Firefighters are the bravest emergency service. Most of the time they are facing unknown powers of nature.

He will be missed by so many.

Thanx, DanielHoup and all those who have reacted. A fire tornado is rare and freakish enough, and this one had enough power to flip a 10 - 12 ton fire engine.

RIP Brother,. I feel and so hate the loss. I too am a firefighter. I know and understand the dangers. But hate to no end the loss of a Brother, no matter where he is. Or what for he fought. My heart goes out to him and his family. My department will say a prayer together for him.

It's the wait when the Vandal's on the line. The best sound in the world is that of his bioke comig down the road after a shift.

No, just ***y patient... My great grandfather was a volunteer 'firey' too, back in the days of kero lamps, candles and wood burning cook-- stoves.

But news this morning shows utter devastation in the south of New South Wales, far worse than what we had here.  I really ought to be doing some housework, but will try and send some news links in a PM later.  There's people down there who got out the front door with the clothes they stood up in and the dog as the fire came in the back door - literally.  They spent their new year's eve at the water's edge while privately-owned boats came in and took away as many as they could.  The Australian Navy's been called out to help now.

May we never lose our strength, resolve and resilience………. it truly is a devastating day in Aus today…….. the worst thing is, that it is not over yet, not by a long shot………..my words are so inadequate to express my sadness, but my tears say it all, as I continue to pray for rain and no more loss........

Thanks, sweetie. Your words are more than adequate.  No, it's not over yet, not even close.  It's going to be a long haul.

Thank you to everyone who has offered their sincerity to ourselves and by proxy, all Aussies in this time of disaster, devastation, political responsibility-dodging and now, again - death.

Another firey died on the line today.
