Can having a Play partner turn into a actual dynamic over time?

It can, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will..it's important is that the "relationship goals" are the same, for example if say your a Dom/me and what you're looking for is a play partner, nothing else, it would be cruel and deceptive to take a sub who's looking for more than that on without being clear of your expectations.

If you're hoping it'll become romantic, sexual, full D/s etc then you're not really focusing on the moment or letting things progress organically.

I don’t think a ‘play’ partner should be anything other than a trusted deep connection partner. If you f a random you run a good risk of getting an STI. If you ‘play’ with a random you run the risk of getting seriously physically hurt. If you are poly or into randoms that’s the emotional safety risk you take. In my experience it’s just not compatable with good ‘play’.
