Looking into the mirror is a mundane action we all do every day, right? For example, when we’re brushing or teeth or hair or getting dressed? Not necessarily. For some people it’s far from mundane; it’s a sexual act all of its own.
Whether you're playing on your own or with partners, the reflection of a mirror gives a whole new view of what’s going on during action, so you don’t miss a single sexy angle.
Some might say a mirror sex fetish – officially named katoptronophilia – is pure narcissism, as illustrated by Christian Bale’s character Patrick Bateman in the film American Psycho. In it, Bateman frequently admires his own chiseled physique and flexes his muscles while he’s having sex with multiple women. Is that what katoptronophilia is about?
Sex in front of a mirror can enhance connection between partners
A sexual arousal from looking into a mirror whilst indulging in sex acts, katoptronophilia can focus on looking at just yourself – as in the case of Patrick Bateman – or it can be arousal from watching the entire the scene (and participants) play out through the mirror.
“Katoptronophilia is more than just a reflection of your kinky self – mirror sex is a fetish that can give you a whole new view on your sex life.”
‘Katoptronophilia disorder’ is an old-fashioned psychological evaluation of this mirror sex fetish, as it was once thought all fetishes were a disorder, not just the way some people get turned on.
Mirrors and sex have a long history of going together. Indeed, sex motels in the States in the 70s were famous for having mirrors on the ceilings, and it’s always been seen as a little kinky to have a bank of mirrored wardrobes facing your bed (guilty as charged!). Here are a few other reasons why sex in front of a mirror drives people wild:
Visual stimuli affects us all – it’s hardwired into our brains – but some people are extremely visually stimulated. Mirror sex gives the opportunity to see the action in a different way, as it happens.
Sex in front of a mirror can harness an exhibitionist streak, giving permission to act out your most sensual fantasies. It’s like you’re viewing your own porn film, that you’re also starring in.
Exhibitionists may love using mirrors to explore their body and kinks
Seeing a partner’s desire – the sheer pleasure in their face or gasping mouth – reflected to you back in a mirror can make you realize just how desirable you are to them. It can also give you a confidence boost, as well the feeling that someone else might be watching, when actually it’s just your reflection. Also, there is the possible feeling of power and control.
Depending on the sexual position, eg, doggie, employing a mirror during sex can help partners maintain eye contact and witness the pleasure they are bringing to each other.
So, as it turns, katoptronophilia is not only about narcissism – sex in front of a mirror has lots of different aspects to it.
It’s not going to surprise you that we here at fetish.com and FET don’t think it is, but what does the rest of the world think about a mirror sex fetish? It’s accepted by academics and medical experts that katoptronophilia disorder isn’t harmful.
“A sexual arousal from looking into a mirror whilst indulging in sex acts, katoptronophilia can focus on looking at just yourself, or it can be arousal from watching the entire the scene.”
So, therefore it's only talked about as a disorder because of it being a fetish. In fact, all fetishes were once thought of as disorders, but that is an outmoded way of thinking now. It is a sexual attraction; part of a person’s sexual make-up and as such totally natural. Katoptronophilia disorder definitely doesn’t exist.
Trying out katoptronophilia is also a good way to get comfortable with your looks. Take a look at your body in the mirror or stroke it. See how your body reacts with flushed skin or goosebumps or moans. You can see how your lover sees you just by looking at your reflection at any time, capturing their lust for you in how you look at yourself.
Katoptronphilia offers the opportunity to watch your sex as a voyeur, to see what you do as if you were watching porn. It’s a way to perform and maybe to imagine you are the object of millions of people’s desires. It’s a great way to embrace your body for it’s true, real beauty. And when you feel sexy, it really shows.
Boost confidence by exploring your body in front of a mirror
We don't all have enormous mirrors fitted to our bedrooms ceilings! So, here are a few practical ways to get started with sex in front of the mirror.
It’s not narcissism, it’s not vanity, it’s just sexy. Katoptronophilia is more than just a reflection of your kinky self – mirror sex is a fetish that can give you a whole new view on your sex life. Whether you indulge on your own or with one or more partners, you’re sure to have at least one more pair of eyes watching on. You might as well give that mirror a damn good show! •
