Molly's BDSM Tips | Where Can I Learn Rope Bondage?

This week, our BDSM advice columnist Molly Moore gives a new Fet member some kinky advice on where they can learn rope bondage - and some useful tips on how to find a rope play partner.

I'm new here on Fetish.com and new to the kinky lifestyle. What I really want to know is where can I go to learn rope bondage, and how do I a find a willing partner to learn with me?

Dear Anonymous J,
Welcome to Fetish.com and the wonderful world of kink! As I'm sure you've discovered, there's a vast array of things to think about and explore, and while it can be somewhat overwhelming at the beginning, having a particular area or focus as a starting point is never a bad thing. Don't forget to be open to discovering new things you never thought might be for you as you go along. You might surprise yourself.  So, let's talk about rope bondage for beginners.

Online rope bondage learning

There are quite literally tons of rope bondage resources online - from beginner to advanced Shibari bondage, the key is finding good online resources that work for you. If podcasts are your thing, then try searching for Graydancer's Ropecast. Grey's podcasts have changed over the years into a slightly broader kink podcast, but all his early episodes are very rope bondage focused and Grey is a very knowledgeable kink practitioner.  

If you prefer to watch something, then YouTube is full of various rope play videos. The Twisted Monk is an excellent place to start and has tons of content for you to follow, along with all sorts of different rope bondage ties and safety aspects, too.

While not online but still an excellent resource, Two Knotty Boys have books for sale on Amazon; Two Knotty Boys Back on the Ropes and Two Knotty Boys Showing You the Ropes. Both books have excellent reviews, and the benefit of a book is you can take it anywhere with you and have a quick look through to help refresh your memory.

 

In-person learning

Learning resources are a beautiful thing, but there's nothing quite like getting your hands dirty (so to speak), so finding local rope bondage events is something I would encourage you to do. Not only do they tend to be great learning environments, but they can often give you tips on where to rope. Rope bondage events are a brilliant way of making other rope play friends.

Depending on where you live will have an effect on how much local stuff there is, but it does take a bit of time to research and find these rope bondage groups as they often don't openly advertise on the internet.

My advice is to try to find your local munch. Go along and ask around about local rope bondage classes, workshops or peer learning groups. Hopefully, people at your munch will be able to point you in the direction of what's local. If you don't live in a city, then you might have to be prepared to travel, but I would urge you to do so as it will be worth your time.

Finding a rope play partner

One of the best things about getting out and meeting people is that it will help with this part of your quest. Although, try not to treat a munch, a rope play class or workshop as a pickup event - it doesn't mean that you won't end up meeting someone at such a place, be open to it rather than expecting it to happen.

Also, spend some time writing an excellent Fetish.com profile for your online presence. Be clear about who you are, what things you like, how experienced you are, the things you would love to try, and what it is you would like to find with another person; are you looking for a monogamous relationship or something casual or maybe purely a rope bunny?

However, don't let a lack of a partner stop you. You can still learn lots of rope bondage skills on your own, and lots of rope play events often have rope bunnies who you can practise with. The more knowledge and confidence you have, the more likely you are to find someone to share it with. Most importantly of all though, have fun exploring and learning.
