Editor's note: as of early 2019, it seems that Fetish Mates is no longer in operation, but we've left our review published, below.

Fetish Mates is fronted by a well-produced, if slightly in-your-face entry page. The screen is filled with calming blue tones, artistic flourishes and a naked woman cloaked in fur. Below there’s selection of profile pictures, mostly of women. They have a privacy policy which is well worth a read if you don’t relish the thought of even more junk mail.
When you first signup to Fetish Mates there's no mention of any fee and you're not asked for any card details. Instead, they hit you with a payment request as soon as you enter to progress and socialise.
Strangely, even if you click away and refuse to pay, certain previously restricted areas become open to you within a few visits, probably done through IP logging.
Some of us put a lot of work into our image through cosplay or dress up, but to others this is less important, and profile pictures are a great way of conveying that. Here, many of the profiles have great BDSM lifestyle pictures, with gags, harnesses and fetish wear dominating the space.
According to the homepage, they have 65 ‘neighbours’ in the UK, although for some reason the site ignores the most basic of preferences by matching members with profiles further afield.
To send a message you have to subscribe, and even commenting on a photo is denied for non-payers. Confusingly, some of the female profiles have a straight, vanilla-looking guy as the picture, with no explanation.
Similarly, a burly, brown-eyed hunk from Alaska is in fact blue-eyed and slim according to his profile... On Fetish Mates it's hard to ignore all the red flags that make you think 'scam'.
Shoutbox is a chat system that members have to upgrade to use, although the software itself is free at source and straightforward to manage.
If you choose to pay, this is a great way of chatting that will get you connected with the owners of those sexy profile pictures immediately. You can also use the basic chat application on Fetish Mates, but that is yet another avenue which only paying members have access to.
Another tab at the top of any Fetish Mates page is 'Video' and these are organised by five further options; 'Latest', 'Top Rated', 'Most Discussed', 'Browse by Tag' and 'Video Categories'. As there are only six videos on the site in total, the same six come up in every search, so if you have a specific kinky interest, the options are pretty limited.
Connecting with other members of the BDSM community is always interesting and hooking up with freaks like us online bypasses those shy first meetings.
Blogs let you share your passions with a crowd and draw like-minded fetish lovers towards you. Sadly, this is yet another barren area of Fetish Mates, just three extremely mundane blogs of one or two lines are featured here, and two of those are from the same person.
If the owners were committed to making a go of this site, it’s fair to assume they’d be cracking the whip and kicking the place into life. This isn’t happening at all and with the total lack of BDSM community dialogue, one solitary group, scant blogs or videos and bizarre profile errors, committing to the site financially or even returning. For the sake of our Fetish Mates review, this kinky dating site is very unappealing...
