Recon and the Recon app is widely known as the biggest fetish app for men seeking kink with other men. But how much BDSM do you get for your bucks? In serving our vision to be the most trusted BDSM and Fetish community, we asked writer Sean Lucas to look under the hood of the Recon app for us.

Recon Overview | Living Your Fantasies?

Recon is aimed solely at male identifying people and states that it is “fiercely protective” of its users’ security. And given the judgment that still surrounds the kink lifestyle, this is most definitely a positive.

The big plus is that unlike other gay apps such as Grindr, Recon is a specialist app devoted to the BDSM and fetish community. Reassurance from the start then: those who have a recon profile are serious about exploring their kinky side. You’ll find experienced kinksters and beginners on here – and everything in between.

Recon Visual Appeal

The black and red design is simple and sexy – and best of all immediately connects you with images of users. But what fetishes does Recon cover? Everything you can imagine – and more! Unlike other apps which will let you tick a BDSM box if you’re lucky, there are plenty of options on Recon. These cover everything from bears to fighting and fisting, gunge and water sports.

Recon App Navigation and User Experience

Navigating around Recon is easy.  When you log in, you’ll find three tabs across the top. “All” is a feed – much like a Facebook feed. It shows you who has “Cruised” you – along with info about Recon events (more on this below).

Your profile has an “About Me” section, and the option to add the interests mentioned above. Additionally, you can state your “Travel Plans”, meaning it’s easier to setup real meets with other Recon men across the world.  Then you have the “Cruises” tab – guys who have shown an interest in you. Lastly, there’s the “Requests” tab. Friend requests appear here.

In the top right-hand corner of the screen, you can access your messages. More importantly, you can check out nearby recon profiles. Just make sure geolocation is enabled in the settings area of your mobile device.  As well as the recon app, there’s a website, so you can connect on your laptop and your mobile device.

Recon Community Feel

Recon boasts members all over the world. At the time of logging on for this review, there were some 65,000 members online. It’s free to become a member and set up a profile on the Recon app.  As a standard member, your options on finding ‘n filtering those Recon men are limited. You can filter by age, role (on a sliding scale from 100% passive to 100% active) and interests.

Recon in real time… Big positive: there’s a blog which keeps you up to date with the latest fetish news. And there are 47 pages of articles here. Not bad going. But if you’re looking for a truly endless wealth of kinky delights check out Fetish.com’s online magazine.

But the greatest benefit of Recon is that it gives you the opportunity to connect with other Recon men at fetish events all over the world.  Better yet, after these parties, Recon uploads pictures to the app. It’s a great way to reinforce that feeling of connection and community.

Is Recon Free to Use?

When you sign up to the Recon app you get Premium membership for a free trial period. After then you have to pay. As a premium member you can view an unlimited number of Recon profiles. You can also apply filters to member lists. Lastly, you get to view over 3.5 million private gallery photos – including the XXX ones, which, let’s face it, is why we’re all here.

Crucially, some premium membership perks apply to the web only – not the Recon app. Arguably the best of these is the possibility of appearing in a top 100 Cruised list.  The premium filters offer a wider range of options. These include searching recon profiles with photos and everything from height to body type and ethnicity.

The real downside is that standard membership limits how many profiles you can view. However, private messaging is unlimited.

Recon Review | Final verdict

Firstly, in connecting you with tens of thousands of serious kinksters, Recon offers you quantity. Set up a decent profile with hot images and your message box will be buzzing with rampant Recon men. But to get the most out of the Recon app you need to opt for the premium membership. Yet this is not essential. You can still connect with recon profiles and a vibrant BDSM community without paying – but with limits.

Like others on the market, the Recon app tantalises you with the full delights of a free trial only to whip it away. It’s not unlike a BDSM beast waving a vast leather jockstrap in front of your face only to then be told: "That’s your lot!"
