My favourite author is Robert Crais. I came across his works by accident in a charity shop because l was attracted to the title, “Voodoo River”. The book title does not feature in the book. I recall paying 50p for the book.

Crais has created a character you get to know really well - Elvis Cole - a private investigator in Los Angeles. Cole has loads of quirky attributes. He has a Pinocchio clock in his office that has moving eyes with each tick of the clock. He has a Corvette Stingray.

Cole has a partner,Joe Pike, who doesn’t say very much. He was an SAS type of man. Totally reliable.

As a spanker it is never far from my mind (read in to that what you will) and there is nothing I like more than when a well written book suddenly involves a discipline scenario. It catches me by surprise and the heart starts racing. They are often disappointing in the end, but it's like I have just discovered spanking for the first time. So much better than spanking porn which is way too predictable.

I prefer audio books, if only because I have the annoying habit of getting too excited by a printed book and rush reading it to see what happens, skipping words, sentences, paragraphs ... you get the drift. That's not so easy with an audio book, so I actually get to hear all the author wrote.

I love Sci-Fi and related genres: my favourite authors include Iain M Banks, China Miéville, and a good number of the 50s/60s classics. Pratchett was both great fun and deviously observant.

I also enjoy whodunnits, and am broadly read, but made the mistake of reading some Chandler, whom I found far far better than any other author, so all I read now is the occasional Rankin to keep an eye on Rebus. I'll add that the death of Steig Larsson was a great loss.

I've not found authors that excite me as much as Banks or Chandler. If someone can recommend something leftfield?
